"For most Americans, big houses have come to symbolize the good life; but, all symbolism aside, the life these places actually foster is more typically one of drudgery. Mortgage payments can appropriate thirty to forty percent of a household's income not counting taxes, insurance, or maintenance expenses. When every spare penny is going towards house payments, there is nothing left over for investments, travel, continued education, more time with the kids, or even so much as a minute to relax and enjoy life. At this rate, an oversized house can start to look more like a debtor's prison than a home." Jay Shafer

Tired of subsidizing the banking industry and being a slave to increasingly out-of-reach high-quality housing and your increasingly uncertain or overly-demanding job? There are many comfortable alternatives to the monthly 30-year mortgage grind and the biggest challenge may be finding a place ro park. If you're interested in finding out more about the principles, practices, and nuts and bolts of some interesting and alternative ways in which to approach your daily life, give the Google Search box below a try.

Life on the farm in a converted mobile post office circa 1972. This rolling tiny house was home for a total of four years. The old chicken coop behind the van was also converted into an even tinier house. I could have never anticipated at the time that there would be a blossoming tiny house movement in the future.

Another post-van New Age motor home project, a 1951 Metro van with a rear Volkswagen rear window skylight. I lived in this one off and on for a summer in 1974. The exterior was hand-painted with a flat green so that it would blend into the woods where I liked to park.

Now that we live in a regular house, this is the 2019 incarnation of our tiny house, a teardrop trailer. This 10 foot-long model from Bend Teardrop features heavy-duty suspension, solar panels, roof rack mounted shade, and is ready for some serious off-the grid part-time High Desert living.
