FROGS IN PARADISE

In celebration of microenvironments in the Oregon desert ... an ecological and archaeological perspective.

The pond supports a robust population of frogs and insects and is a rare source of water for local wildlife. The area around the spring and throughout the nearby campground also shows abundant evidence of prehistoric use in the presence of obsidian debitage. The volcanic glass at this site originated from the nearby Quartz Mountain obsidian source.

The same pond three years later showing the effects of a regional drought (April, 2022).

Despits its shrinking size, the pond provides habitat for abundant adult frogs. Where did the frogs come from? For a possible answer, click on the image above.
